The inspiration for this innovative design came from the desire to create a packaging solution that could be reused after the initial product was consumed. The Embossed Nutella Jar is the first of its kind, designed specifically for reuse in food preservation. The jar's thread is designed to fit Bormioli Rocco's lids, and the glass is resistant to the thermal shock of pasteurisation, making it ideal for reuse.
The jar is made using Soda-Lime Glass blown with IS technology, ensuring its durability and suitability for food preservation. The jar's dimensions are 110mm in width, 94mm in depth, and 126mm in height, with a weight of 0.4Kg. This makes it a compact and lightweight solution for food storage.
The design process was not without its challenges. The iconic shape of the Nutella jar had to be redesigned to accommodate the requirements of a functional package capable of withstanding a strong life cycle. Extensive research was conducted on a range of glass containers and lids for food preservation to ensure the jar met all necessary specifications.
The Embossed Nutella Jar project started in early 2014 and was completed by the end of the year. It has been available for purchase since 2015. The jar features a raised glass imprint of the Nutella logo on the front, maintaining the company's traditional image while introducing a new, sustainable approach to packaging.
The innovative design of the Embossed Nutella Jar has been recognized with a Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing. The Embossed Nutella Jar is not just a product; it's a testament to the power of design in driving sustainable practices.
